With CBT, the recommended treatment methods are for depression, low mood, generalised anxiety, health anxiety, insomnia, low self-esteem, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence based psychotherapy model that focuses on examining an individual’s thoughts, and how these can negatively influence a person’s feelings/mood, and consequently their behaviour and wellbeing. Through CBT’s Goal-oriented approach we aim to challenge these thoughts, alter the negative perceptions that stem from them and in turn improve their mental health.

CBT’s primary benefit is it’s diverse range of treatment plans for many psychological issues making it the current mainstream in psychotherapy and the most appropriate option for most people. It is a form of talking therapy that aims to help individuals manage their mental health issues by changing negative thought patterns and behaviours.

CBT teaches coping skills and strategies to deal with different problems, emphasising how thoughts and beliefs affect emotions and actions. It is a structured, goal-oriented therapy that empowers individuals to take control of their mental health, and is currently one of the most prevalent and effective therapeutic styles.

What happens in therapy?

Therapy can take different forms depending on your needs and what type of therapy or counselling may be suitable.

Most therapy takes place in planned, regular sessions which last for around 50 minutes. How often you see your therapist and how many appointments you have will depend on your individual circumstances, and will be agreed between you and your therapist.

During a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy session, your therapist may take you through specific exercises designed to help with your problem, or you might have more general discussions about how you’re feeling. What you talk about will vary depend on what you want help with and the therapist’s approach. It could include:

  • your relationships
  • your childhood
  • your feelings, emotions or thoughts
  • your behaviour
  • past and present life events
  • situations you find difficult

A therapist will not give you their opinions or advice or prescribe medication. They will help you find your own solutions – whether that’s making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems.

Your therapist will be impartial but understanding. They will listen to you without judgment and help you explore your thoughts and emotions. They may offer information and support, but they won’t tell you what you should think or do. The session is your time, it’s what you want to discuss and what you need support with.

How can we help?

Our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Counselling Services are based on evidence based treatment plans, with a goal-oriented and empathetic driven approach. CBT is currently considered the mainstream and most popular choice of the therapeutic practices. With it’s proven track record of improving wellbeing and mood, it has been a consistently popular choice for those experiencing mental health issues. It is an extremely broad modality, and can be utilised to help with the following disorders:

Anxiety Disorders (such as Generalised Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety), Low Mood, Depression, Low Self Esteem, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Panic Disorder, Grief, Sleep Problems/Insomnia, Eating Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anger and Eating Disorders, amongst other mental health conditions.

What to expect from your first therapy or counselling session

Every therapist and counsellor has their own way of starting therapy, but a first session will generally involve:

  • Introductions
Your therapist will take a few minutes to introduce themselves and explain how they work. You can ask them about their qualifications and experience, your therapy or anything you’re not sure about. At Prosperity, we also offer a free 15 minute introductory consultation call where you can ask about anything you’re uncertain of, or how sessions will work.
  • Assessment
Your therapist may ask you if you would like to give a history of the problems you’re experiencing. They may want you to complete some forms or assessment tools (these will be explained for clarification, and you have the option to complete in session or in advance), or go through information they’ve received about you, such as a letter from your GP. Or they may just ask you to ‘tell your story’. It’s important that you feel you’ve had the opportunity to tell the therapist about what’s troubling you and what has brought you to therapy.
  • Contracting
Your therapist should agree the terms, or contract with you, about how they will provide their services. This will be established in a printed or digital document for you both to sign.

This first session is important for making sure that you feel comfortable with your therapist and their way of working. You don’t have to continue with a therapist if you can’t relate to them or don’t feel safe.

Getting the most out of therapy

You’ll get the best results from your therapy if you’re open and honest with your therapist and say how you’re really feeling and what you’re experiencing. It is a collaborative process, where both counsellor and client work together and establish a rapport.

Your relationship with your therapist is very important. If you’re to work effectively together, you should feel safe and able to take risks by disclosing and discussing sensitive issues. That includes being able to give them honest feedback on how you feel about your therapy and how you’re working together.

Our Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & Counselling Services are based in Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, although we do offer online therapy via video calls as an alternative at Client’s preference. If there is any questions you may have that isn’t outlined above, or anything you’re unsure about I’ll be happy to answer directly through email, call or text.
